Paciencia.  Patience.  This pretty much sums up the key ingredient to building a boat in Argentina.

Having spent a fair amount of time with our boat on two different occasions over the past several weeks, I can happily say there is good progress.  I'll share some of my observations.

Logistical Headaches

Building a boat in Argentina is not for the impatient gringo.  It's complicated.  Importing stuff for our boat is painful at best.  Customs, 50% import duty, shipping costs, etc all add up.  If you don't bring it down with you via checked luggage - a.k.a. a mule, expect to pay mucho dinero for shipping and transport costs to Uruguay.  Neil and I are currently experiencing this headache for our life rafts, flares, etc, etc.  Ugly.

Antares also has similar challenges.  They have to have items 'typified' for customs to allow import without the taxes.  This is done because the components for our boats are for export and not subject to 50% duty.  This process is messy and takes time.  Adding to the challenges of boat supplies arriving in time for the production schedules of our boats.

Fortunately we are very flexible on our plans.  We have made multiple trips back and forth from Denver and plan to continue this until the boat is finally in the Caribbean.  ETA to St. Lucia is late January.  Most of the month of January I will be sailing the boat with captain and crew while family is in Denver.  We'll post more details on specific plans later this month.

Our boat is coming along.  Splash date is late November.  A considerable amount of progress has been done in the past two weeks since I was last in Argentina.  This was the first time that Michael and Elizabeth have seen the boat.  In short, they were VERY excited to walk around and look at 'stuff'.  Elizabeth was most excited about the bunk beds...and most importantly that her bed was the 'top' bed and Michael's was the bottom bed....hmm.... :)

Today was her day.  People stopped and stared.  A way was made.   Shyly, yet proudly, she inched down the roads of San Fernando, and men flocked around her to lend a helping hand.  Trees were cut down, power lines lifted, cars pulled aside.  Nothing could stop her.  She felt a little vulnerable, quite naked,  really, without the adornments of lines and a powerful mast that would proclaim her a sailing vessel.  Yet, she inched forward, ready to dip her keels in that water and finally float. Ulithi Atoll, Federated States of Micronesia (FSM)

Sweet kids of MogMog MogMog Island, Ulithi Atoll “It’s turned into a tropical storm, but all the weather forecasts show it going well north of us.”  Famous.  Last.  Words.   On our way from Yap to Guam, we opted to stopover in the Ulithi Atoll, just to regroup and rest.  It wasn’t a planned stop, but we all needed a welcomed break from the seas.  Of course, because it wasn’t planned, we hadn’t told anyone in Ulithi we were coming.  When we dropped the anchor just off the beach of MogMog Island, we immediately got a call on our VHF radio with a polite voice asking why we were there, how many people were onboard, and what our intentions were.  We assured them we meant no harm and were simply stopping to give our family a rest.  Then we all piled in the dinghy with a small gift in hand for the chief (an LED flashlight) to say hello to our new neighborhood. Off the Beaten Path - Cruising Sumatra's West Coast!

After our time in Borneo, we needed to start considering our cruising plans.  Would we follow the standard cruiser track and head up the Malacca Strait to Singapore?  Or would we try another route and blaze our own trail around the southwest coast of Sumatra? The Malacca Strait is a popular topic among cruiser forums, where sailors commiserate about the sheer number of shipping vessels that congest the narrow waterway between Singapore and Indonesia.  Wikipedia defines it as “a narrow, 550 mi stretch of water between the Malay Peninsula and the Indonesian island of Sumatra. As the main shipping channel between the Indian Ocean and the Pacific Ocean, it is one of the most important shipping lanes in the world.”  The site (link to Wiki article on Malacca Strait) goes on to state that in 2008, the annual number of vessels transiting the strait was 94,000!  These stats weren’t the reason we didn’t take the Malacca Strait path that most cruisers take when they travel from Indonesia to Mal
